Tribal Entries into Glacier Bay Homeland

Hoonah Indian Association and Glacier Bay National Park have streamlined the process for tribal members to visit Glacier Bay Homeland on privately-operated vessels. During the visitor use season (June 1- August 31), members of the general public are required to obtain a permit to enter Glacier Bay; private entry permits are limited to protect Homeland resources. However, tribal members may notify the Hoonah Indian Association of an intended entry and enter Homeland without need of a vessel entry permit. This option is available to all tribal members wishing to access Homeland on private vessels; commercial entries are not permitted.

Tribal members wishing to visit Glacier Bay Homeland in privately-operated vessels should contact: Darlene See, HIA Cultural Director. Captains of vessels must participate in a brief boater orientation process which includes watching two short films and completing a brief form. This orientation is required annually. Captains can access the orientation films and the form online here:

Completed forms should be sent to: darlene.see@hiatribe.org
Upon receipt of the signed form, HIA will notify the park that a given vessel intends to access Homeland on a given day.
Vessel captains should hail Bartlett Cove upon entry to Glacier Bay (when a vessel crosses an imaginary line between Point Carolus and Point Gustavus) and advise that they are entering the park on a Tribal Administrative Entry. Please provide basic information including vessel name and number of persons on the vessel.
